"Sun, sea and shifting sands" - an exhibition of paintings and prints from our Museum Collection about the Teign Estuary

Teign Heritage - Teignmouth and Shaldon Museum, 29 French Street, Teignmouth, Devon, TQ14 8ST

  • 07 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

This exhibition will be held at Teign Heritage Centre, Teignmouth, Devon, from 7th to 14th September, with Heritage Open Day on 14th September. Our aim is to inspire local artists to create their own response to the art for a later exhibition in 2025

This event aims to engage local artists to depict aspects of environmental change in the Teign Estuary and the coast using original paintings and prints from the past as themes. Their artworks will be shown in a Marine Environment art exhibition to be held at the Teignmouth Arts Action Group Centre in Teignmouth in the Spring 2025.

This is a preliminary part of our Environment project 2024 - 26. As well as encouraging an artistic response to our beautiful landscape, we wish to engage Museum visitors and local people in the changing local environment over time. The project aims to discover the history of weather in the Teign Estuary and the coastal area, and a programme of talks will be publicised to use aspects of science to understand that history, the current situation and future climate change. These changes will be demonstrated in a public exhibition at the Museum in the Summer of 2025.

In addition, students from local schools will be given an opportunity to work on the science and modelling of weather, using historical meteorological records in the Museum Collection, via workshops run by the Meteorological Office in Exeter and the University of Exeter. Results from this analysis will be digitised and put on display in a final exhibition in Summer 2026.

This project has been funded by the Royal College (of Science).

The Museum Galleries will also be open to visitors at the same time as the exhibition.
