Stream Safari: Discover the Bear Brook
Swallow Lane Park, Swallow Lane, Fairford Leys, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, HP19 7AS
Join us for Stream Safari: Discovering Bear Brook, hosted by the River Thame Conservation Trust during the Heritage Open Days festival. This free public event invites you to explore Bear Brook's underwater ecosystem and learn kick sampling, a method used by our citizen scientists in the Riverfly Partnership national monitoring scheme.
You'll discover how aquatic invertebrates indicate river health and learn about the diverse wildlife, including fish, birds, and mammals like otters, that depend on Bear Brook's habitat. Additionally, we'll discuss the impact of invasive non-native species in the brook and how you can help manage them. Learn why rivers and streams are vital for all these creatures, not just the ones underwater. Families will enjoy our hands-on exhibit featuring animal skulls and footprints.
This hands-on experience offers insights into local river ecology and highlights simple actions you can take to protect rivers, along with volunteering opportunities with the River Thame Conservation Trust. Join us to learn more about your local watercourse and how you can contribute to its preservation.

To participate in the Riverfly kick sampling, attendees will need to assess their ability to enter and exit the brook safely. There will be other activities available at the stall that do not require getting into the water.
