Step Inside the Old House

This large Grade II listed private house has a centuries long history at the core of the commercial heart of Harleston. For much of the 18th and 19th Century, when the town thrived due to international cattle trade, the building housed a draper’s shop owned by the builders of the adjacent Corn Hall. The tour will include the former drapers’ showroom, dining room, kitchen, Victorian extension and access to the walled garden with an explanation of various outbuildings.

As well as highlighting some of the architectural features and explaining the evolution of the building, the tour will include tales of a number of the inhabitants during the period . Having been owned by the Denny family in the early 20th Century, we are lucky to have a number of photographs of the house and garden from the Denny collection including those featuring Officers from the Royal Naval Airship Station at Pulham which will also form part of the tour.

We believe this is the first time this building has been made available for viewing and thank the current owners for their generosity in sharing their home with us.

This is a private house and we ask all visitors to respect the privacy of the owners. This event forms part of a town wide community programme involving over 20 local groups to celebrate Heritage Open Days and our association with the Mayflower ship and pilgrims which sailed to America in 1620.
