St Peters Yateley

St Peters church in Yateley is a great and glorious place. It contains a unique heritage of life in Yateley, the building comprising the efforts of many working men and women over the years, including quite recent times. The site has been a place of Christian worship since the 8th century, starting with a small Saxon church, which is thought to have burnt down about 750. The church has steadily evolved from small beginnings to a large scale re-building in Victorian times. There was another substantial re-building in 1979 due to a disastrous fire which destroyed most of the structure. The purpose of our open day is to give people the chance to look at the interior of the building, which because of its long history comprises a number of interesting architectural and structural features. The church building is normally closed to the public, apart from when services take place, so few people get the chance to view the interior.
Visitors will be welcomed at the main door and taken in small groups first to the 13th century Chapel at the East end followed by a viewing of the main church and finally the 16th century Bell Tower at the West end. The guides will point out features of architectural interest and there will be displays of old documents, photographs. There will also be a short video of the fire in 1979, running on a loop.
*On exhibition this year will be our beautiful 17th century Crystal Cup which is normally held in safekeeping at Winchester Cathedral.*
