St Peter's Church, Hartshead with Hightown
St Peter's Church, Church Lane, Hartshead, West Yorkshire, WF15 8EU
St Peter's Church is thought to be around 1000 years old. The two Norman Arches date to just under 1000 years ago. The Saxon tower is said to make the church the shortest, highest church in England. Within the large churchyard, with an amazing view, stands an old yew tree from which Robin Hood is said to have taken his final bow.
The illegally interred remains of some of the Luddites are also said to have been buried in the consecrated church grounds. Patrick Bronte served five years as curate in charge of St Peter's from 1810. It was during his time here that he married his wife Maria and their first child Maria was baptised at St Peter's Church. Patrick Bronte himself may even be on-site.
There will be archived registers on display at the Heritage Weekend as well as records from the local school & old school register from 1870
