St Peter and St Paul Church, Scarning
St Peter and St Paul Church, Dereham Road, Scarning, Dereham, Norfolk, NR19 2PF
The oldest part of the church is thought to date from the 13th century. The south wall contains some intriguing fragments of stone which might have been recycled from an earlier building.
Features include a massive 13th century stone font with ornate cover, a very wide nave, a delicate chancel screen and a gloriously vibrant east window. Visitors will be able to visit the belfry to see the fine set of bells. We will have displays on local history and on Scarning’s famous rector, Dr Augustus Jessopp, who was chaplain to King Edward VII and a renowned author. There will also be a quiz for children. As a bonus, the church will be decorated for the Harvest Festival. Light refreshments will be available.
Unfortunately, the church is on the Heritage at Risk Register because remedial work is needed on the tower. A fund raising campaign will begin shortly.

There is wheelchair access to the nave. In the tower, access to the clock room is via a spiral staircase. A wooden ladder then leads to the bell chamber.
Toilet facilities are available in the Village Hall opposite the church. Parking is in the lay-by opposite - avoiding the bus stop and drive entrances. Parking is also available in the lay-by just beyond the church on the way to Wending and in the playing field car park on Shipdham Lane.
