St Michael the Archangel, Pig Lane, Kirkby Malham, Skipton, North Yorkshire, BD23 4BS
This ancient Church known locally as the Cathedral of the Dales was built to the glory of God by the monks of West Dereham in 1490. There has been a place of Christian worship here on this site for well over 1000 years. Many original features remain such as the original roof timbers, niches and carvings on the nave pillars, boxed pews, and 13th century priests coffin lids from the earlier church on this site. The church has historic links with Oliver Cromwell, General John Lambert, Walter Morrison (owner of the Malham Tarn estate until his death in 1921) and has many delightful features for you to discover, including stained glass, a heritage area, Jacobean pews, an 11th century font, and trout designed by David Tippey incorporated in the design of the metal gates.
The building is normally open every day from 9am-early evening, but for Heritage Open Days we are holding special Open Afternoons on Sundays 8th and 15th September to enable you to make the most of your visit. Please see the church website for details of special events, services, facilities, and how to contact us www.kirkbymalhamchurch.org and also our Facebook page for up to date news of what's happening each week www.facebook.com/KirkbyMalhamChurch Please see also http://www.kirkbymalham.info/ for Local History information.

This is an ancient historic site, with stone floors and paths, which are slightly uneven, and can be slippery when wet. Please take care in the church and grounds. Access is easy for people needing the assistance of walking aids. When the church is open but unmanned wheelchair users will need to pre-arrange a visit so that we can ensure that the large gates are unlocked to allow access. Please phone or email the event organiser in advance if you require wheelchair access to the church at any time other than Sundays 8th or 15th September 2pm to 4pm.
This is a peaceful place in which visitors can find space to reflect, as well as to enjoy the heritage and beauty of the building. There is a well stocked card stall with cards and church guidebooks for sale, and a number of hand-carved wooden items for sale in aid of church funds. A card-reader is available as well as facilities for cash sales and donations. There is also a small community library where second hand books may be purchased. There are benches available for picnics in the church grounds, and a wild flower meadow. Walter Morrison's grave is in the graveyard.
