St Marys Mill Chalford

St. Marys Mill, St. Marys, London Road, Chalford, Gloucestershire, GL6 8PX

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Visit part of a 200 year old woollen cloth mill with a surviving waterwheel and a steam engine that turns. There is much more besides at this beautiful site!

St Mary's Mill was built in 1820 to make fine woollen cloth. It ended by making walking sticks for hospitals and the blind but the story is much more winding than that! One of the original waterwheels survives along with the fourth steam engine to be there; it will be ingeniously driven without steam. Around these fine exhibits are varied machines made or used locally that are stored as part of the collection of the Stroudwater Textile Trust. There will be displays of samples of locally-made material that went to war, lined early Rolls Royces, dressed dolly birds and bounces on tennis courts world-wide etc etc! Evidence of the ingenuity of the Valleys!
