Grade II listed church, refurbished. Sculpture by Peter Eugene Ball and three Robert Thompson (Mouseman) items. Grave of Mary Taylor, friend of Charlotte Bronte.

St Mary’s church was built in 1851 by John Dobson of Leeds. It has a neo-Gothic Tower and a steeply roofed nave. The church was extensively reordered 2003-04. Liturgical reordering took place at the same time. This involved removal of the pews and replacement with upholstered chairs. The heating system was changed to underfloor heating and the floors were levelled and carpeted to provide easy access for wheelchair users. The high altar was replaced and moved forward from the sanctuary to the chancel. The work was consecrated on 30th May 2004.

The Church is a Grade II listed building and was certified in February 1984. Items worth seeing: a) An imposing sculpture of the Christus (wood, copper and gold leaf) made by Peter Eugene Ball hangs from the roof of the nave. b) 3 items made by Robert Thompson (the Mouseman): the memorial board, the notice board in the porch and the tabernacle in the chapel c) Amongst the beautiful stained glass windows is a window dedicated to Lady Firth d) there are 4 war graves and also the grave of Mary Taylor, friend of Charlotte Bronte
