St Mary's Church in Hemyock has a record that Thomas de Hydon was Rector from 1268 and in the 1300s a separate chantry chapel was dedicated to St Katherine by St Peter d'Uvedale and his wife Margaret who owned the adjacent Hemyock Castle.

St Mary's Church has been the central place of worship for Hemyock residents being close to the Castle and the public house, The Catherine Wheel. It is open every day and will be open on Heritage Open Day, 8th September, with a public service from 1100 to 1230. During the day there will be a display of material recognising the long history of Christianity in the area. During the day there will be a display of material, documents and images accumulated as the Blackdown Archives in digitised form with keyword search and catalogued by place, family names and description. These archives have been assembled over many years with copies of original documents. The impressive weathercock was erected in 1750.

Tea, coffee, soft drinks and cakes are available from 1400 to 1700 on Sunday 8th September. There will be a normal Sunday service from 1100 to 1230 that the public can join quietly but with no distractive moving around the Church during the service, only as directed.'
