St Mary-at-the-Walls has a rich history, both as a church and, more recently, as the Colchester Arts Centre. Refurbished in 2021, it boasts amazing mosaic toilets, which are not to be missed, as well as stunning views from the top of its tower.

The original late medieval church was severely damaged during the 1648 Siege of Colchester, being largely rebuilt in the early 18th century and then again by the architect A. W. Blomfield in 1871-2. Interesting monuments include a large seated figure commemorating the clothier and merchant John Rebow (died 1699) erected by his son Sir Isaac Rebow M.P. The war memorial chapel of 1922 is now used as the Art Centre's green room.

The church has had several notable rectors over the years, including Philip Morant from 1737 to 1773. He was a celebrated historian and author, writing the 'History and Antiquities of Colchester' and 'History and Antiquities of the county of Essex' between 1763 and 1768.

The award-winning, newly installed toilets feature the work of mosaic artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding. Today, the building hosts a regular programme of events ranging from jazz music, comedy shows, beer festivals and folk clubs.

The offices and dressing rooms will all be open for you to stroll around and you can climb the tower offering fabulous views.
