St. Lawrence Chapel, St. Lawrence Lane, Ashburton, Newton Abbot, Devon, TQ13 7DD
St Lawrence Chapel was originally built at the beginning of the 14th century and was a chantry chapel for bishop Stapleton, bishop of Exeter. He granted the chapel to the town in 1314. The appointed priest started the education of the choir boys and later the chapel became Ashburton grammar school, with a number of eminent pupils. The archives cover all this. The chapel was virtually rebuilt about 1740 in simple rococo style and has some of the best handmade plasterwork in the West Country.
Have an escorted trip up the tower and view historic Ashburton - HODs is the only time tower tours are availble!
