Located in the conservation village of Walton, Warrington, described as a mini cathedral, the church was built by Sir Gilbert Greenall, Bart. for the Walton estate workers. The church is in gothic style built in 1885 of Cheshire sandstone.

This beautiful Victorian church was consecrated in May 1885 during a snowstorm! It was funded by Sir Gilbert Greenall, a wealthy brewery owner. The family lived a Walton Hall, now owned by Warrington Borough Council, and is a very popular amenity for visitors. Sir Gilbert's son became the first Lord Daresbury and the Lord Daresburys continue as patrons of St john's church.
No expense was spared in the construction and fittings; the foremost architects of the day, Paley and Austin of Lancaster were employed, the contractor being R Fairhurst of Whitley.
the font is of Devonshire marble, the reredos is of beautifully carved oak, unusual is depicting Christ's crucifixion.
The lectern is also carved oak, an eagle with claws stretching over an orb, representing the word of God spreading over the world.
The roof is unusual, wagon-shaped with various painted ecclesiastical symbols, the ten commandments painted above the choir stalls.
A fanlight of amber glass in the centre of the tower gives a warm glow to the church.
Lighting was renewed in 1934 with Art Deco lights.
The altar frontals are original 19th century, expertly repaired/renewed by church members.
The high quality organ is a 3 manual Hills & Sons, with fine tonal qualities and splendid casing.
The stained glass windows are original but with some later additions; in the south transept is a window designed by Lady Daresbury in memory of her son, Gilbert, who died in a motoring accident.
