Visit the 18th century Assembly Room on the first floor of St John's House, Winchester

St John's is an ancient Winchester charity and St John's House in the Broadway has medieval origins. But in the mid 18th century a fashionable Assembly Room was created on the first floor to host balls, concerts and other events. The Room is not usually open to the public, so this is a rare opportunity to see where Paganini and Liszt once performed and where Jane Austen may have come to hear her piano teacher play. Winchester Tourist Guides will be leading short tours to tell the story of St John's and of the Assembly Room, including its subsequent history as a cinema, law court and church - amongst other uses.
