St Hilda's Church

Cross Green Lane, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS9 0DG

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Built in 1882, by Yorkshire architect JT Micklethwaite, designed for Anglo-Catholic worship. Amazing collection of carved and decorated woodwork. A landmark building at a major gateway into the city, close to the A63, en route from Junction 45.

Discover a church which is built from the same red brick as the nearby housing, symbolising that it belongs to the community that it was built to serve. There is a unique collection of carved and painted woodwork, including a rood screen with loft (accessed via a spiral staircase), an amazing font canopy, side-screens, reredos - and much more. The quality of natural light is an important feature. It is a listed building but is not a museum. It has movable chairs and so is a flexible building that lends itself well to modern forms of worship, in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, as well as accommodating community and school events of all kinds. It is a focal point, a centre of activity and the heart-beat of the community. We are again displaying photographs of this area in the past and of church events. Come and see.
