St Helen's Church, a Georgian Church with a unique painted east window dated 1700 by Henry Gyles

Grade II* listed and situated within the Denton Conservation Area, St Helen's Church was completed in 1776. It was designed by John Carr of York as part of his comprehensive scheme for a new Palladian mansion house at Denton Hall for Sir James Ibbestson. Remarkably, the east window is dated 1700 and is the jewel in the crown. It was considered so important that John Carr had to abandon his classical ideals and create a gothic framework to display this unique glass. Pevsner describes the church 'Hybrid Gothic-cum-classical'; and the east window as 'an important example of English glass painting of the period'.
