St Clement Danes Church & Crypt
St Clement Danes Church, Strand, London, Greater London, WC2R 1DH
St Clement Danes is a Sir Christopher Wren designed church with a 1000 year history. It was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1682 following the great fire of London and was a parish church until 1941 when it was bombed during the Blitz. Thereafter, it was rebuilt by the Royal Air Force, becoming their central church; it was reconsecrated in 1958. There is much to be explored in the church about its history, connection to the Royal Air Force, famous bells, and crypt.
There are currently building works at St Clement Danes, which will restore the historic church steeple. The steeple, added to the church in 1719 by James Gibbs, became damaged when it was bombed in the Second World War. The restoration will preserve the steeple, and the church, for future generations.
