St. Alphege Church Solihull Open Day

St. Alpheges Church, The Square, Solihull, Warwickshire, B91 3RH

  • 14 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

St. Alphege Church, named for the Archbishop of Canterbury murdered by the Danes in 1012, is an 800 year old building in the heart of Solihull. Join us for tours of church and tower, refreshments and information about activities and local history.

St. Alphege hoped to join HODs for the church’s 800th anniversary, but Covid prevented that. After an interregnum, we now have a new Rector who is very keen to reach out to the whole local community and holding a church open day coinciding with national HODs seemed an ideal opportunity. The church has architecture from the Early Thirteenth to the Sixteenth Centuries, including an unusual two-storey chapel, a chantry above an unspoilt crypt chapel where the priest lived, which is complete with fireplace and easily barred Medieval door. There is also some fine Nineteenth and Twentieth Century stained-glass, but sadly only fragments of the medieval glass and wall-paintings survive. The pulpit and altar rails are excellent examples of Stuart era woodwork.
