Sovereign Design House was originally built in 1955, providing purpose-built washing facilities for the workers at the then-adjacent Broadbent Foundry. Open as Toast House café during term time and intermittently as an art gallery and event space, this is an opportunity for members of the public to explore this unique building which retains a number of original features.
Join us at 14:30, where local historian Chris Marsden will give a short illustrated talk on the history of this grade II listed former industrial amenities block. 1953 UK legislation made amenity blocks for iron foundries compulsory but instead of basic facilities Huddersfield architects produced this Frank Lloyd Wright inspired design with a sun terrace...
