Somerleyton Swing Bridge dates to the early 1900s and has carried the railway between Lowestoft and Norwich across the River Waveney for over 100 years. regularly opening to river traffic, the bridge still uses many of its original components. One of just three fully operational original swing bridges in Norfolk & Suffolk, this tour by kind permission of Network Rail is a very rare opportunity to see the bridge operating and learn more of its history. Please note that tours are STRICTLY BY APPOINTMENT ONLY and tour slots and timings will be on application via email at [email protected] or in person at the Station Shop & Tourist Information Office at Lowestoft Railway Station. Visitors must be able to walk around one mile on uneven ground and climb several steps. Age 5+ Children must be accompanied by an adult. Maximum 2 places per household.

Accessibility details

The swing bridge is not accessible other than on foot, over very uneven ground with a substantial number of steps to climb. There are no toilets or other facilities available on site. Only those pre booked will be admitted. On booking, subject to availability a time slot will be allocated and a designated meeting point given from where visitors will be chaperoned to the bridge.
