Ryhope Engines Museum
Ryhope Pumping Station, The Waterworks, Ryhope, Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, SR2 0ND
Ryhope Pumping Station is a distinctive example of the industrial architecture of mid Victorian times. Its engines show the high standards of mechanical engineering design and construction of that age. The visual appeal had then not been sacrificed entirely to function and there is finely restrained ornamentation on both the building and engines. The two giant 1868 Woolf Compound beam engines will be working with steam power provided by a hand-fired 1908 Lancashire boiler. Additional galleries depict small and large static engines, wooden water pipes, a working water wheel and a working blacksmith's shop. Ask our blacksmith to make you something special as a memento of your day. Our volunteers will be on hand to help enhance your visit and you can use your own wifi enabled smartphone/tablet for free access to our digital information system which provides much more information along with lots of fantastic images not available on our website. Complete your tour with a visit to our popular Gatehouse tearooms for a fine cuppa and a selection of our on-site baked cakes and freshly made snacks.
