Hovingham All Saints church: Ryedale networks and connections. What did the Victorians do for the Street Churches?
All Saints Church, Hovingham, North Yorkshire, YO62 4LF
Join us for the end of day heritage talks and tours – or just join us at Hovingham – for a glass of fizz and a celebration of this fascinating ancient church and its place in Ryedale. Dr Dav Smith will reflect on the fascinating (and sometimes fractious) discussions about patronage and restoration and the tensions at the heart of this church’s Victorian restoration. Professor Kate Giles will speculate about what scheme of wall paintings might have been lost during the works and why they were never recorded.
There will be opportunities to look more closely at the significant Anglo-Saxon tower and sculpture, reflecting on recent discoveries in Hovingham by Professor Dominic Powlesland which raise questions about the village – and church’s place in the early Christian landscape of Ryedale and discover more about local history groups and resources you can join to find out more.
Saturday 14th September (but the church will be open all day, as it is every day)
