Runcorn & District Historical Society Heritage Open Days. “Networks” display, featuring our travelling and trade routes by road, water, and rail. Free entry, every welcome, light refreshments available. Wicksten Drive Christian Centre, Runcorn

Come along and discover all about our earliest appearance on the map in Saxon times, our first roads and how they brought new people to our town. See how our location on the River Mersey was key to keeping the Vikings out of Mercia, and at the start of the Industrial Revolution how important our network of canals became by opening up access for the inland Northwest to trade, commerce, imports and exports with the rest of the world through our docks and the port. Follow the changes and transformations in Victorian times, from a pleasant and quiet rural Georgian riverside Spa Town to a busy, thriving and rapidly expanding major industrial town and port. Find out how we “Bridged the Gap” with the spectacular engineering of our four innovative landmark bridges crossing the Mersey. We will be sharing lots of images and photographs on our display boards, and will also have a great selection of maps and items from our Society Archives out to view too.
