Royston Parish Church Guided Tours

The Parish Church of St John the Baptist in the town of Royston was built within a stone’s throw of the crossroads between the Icknield Way and Ermine Street and dates back to the 12th Century, when it was founded as an Augustinian Priory. Its location on the main route to and from major settlements such as Lincoln, York and Edinburgh means that travellers ranging from Kings and knights to highwaymen would have passed through Royston and many will have visited the church to pray. Follow in their footsteps and come to see this church with historical features dating back through the centuries. The building has recently reopened following major repairs and refurbishment following a devastating fire in 2018. We will have information and tour guides available to explain the history and the stories of some of the people who have made this place special over the last 850 years (30 minute tours running throughout the day). There will be a children's trail and activities. You can find out more about bell-ringing with demonstrations at 10:05, 13:05 and 15:05 of our historic bells being rung. There will be opportunities to hear the new organ and to try it (under supervision, at 11:05, 12:05 and 14:05). Delicious teas and cakes and home made produce will also be on sale all day.

Directions:

Royston Parish Church can be reached on foot from entrances in Church Lane, Melbourn Street or the Priory Park. Sorry, we do not have any parking on site, but there is Pay and Display parking close by either on Fish Hill, Royston (SG8 9JG) or the Civic Centre Car Park (SG8 7XB). There are level paths leading to the church (wheelchair and buggy friendly).

Accessibility details

There is level access to Royston Parish Church nave, kitchen and toilets, and a ramp to the chancel. The ringing gallery is only accessible via a staircase.
