Celebrate this year’s Heritage Open Days theme, Routes – Networks – Connections with Daventry Museum.

Daventry was historically well-connected thanks to the town’s central location in the Midlands and its coaching trade, canals, and train station. Visitors can find out more about this side of Daventry’s heritage through fun activities and exhibits, including displays from the Daventry Model Boat Club and the Daventry Model Railway Club. There will also be individual exhibitor displays of a 1910 B Type open top motor bus, a 1929 Austin 7 and a 1930s Southern Railway Steam Locomotive.

Visitors can also explore the museum’s current exhibition, ‘Daventry Retail through the Ages’, which looks back on a bygone age of shopping. From Butchers and Bakers to Grocery Stores and Ironmongers, discover the types of goods and wares that were on sale in Daventry’s historical shops.

The exhibition reflects on how the retail experience has changed in Daventry, from the days when shops used to be named after the owner, like Mrs Osborn’s Corner Shop or Collet Bros. who appear to have had various businesses in the town.

There’s plenty for young visitors to enjoy too, with a scavenger hunt, a fun quiz, colouring, and the Museum Mart toy shop.

The museum’s Heritage Open Days event is running alongside Northampton Transport Heritage Bus Tours  and  Daventry Foodies Market, which both take place on the same day in the town centre.
