Craft skills at Chedham's Yard - volunteers open the garden, exhibition and work wheelwright and blacksmiths' workshops that connect the generations of a working family at the hub of a rural agricultural community. This is their story.

Chedham's Yard is a well preserved example of traditional craft at the heart of the agricultural economy of centuries past. The collection of tools, machinery, carts, wheels and raw materials are set in a traditional garden at the heart of historic Wellesbourne. This year, researchers have explored the Chedham family tree following the many generations of men and women who learned and worked their trade to provide invaluable services to the local farming community.

Traditionally at the heart of the agricultural economy Chedham's Yard has been a creative space for 200 years. The tools, wheels and equipment crafted for the local farming community can be seen in carefully restored forge, workshops and garden. Visitors will have the opportunity to see our traditional forge in operation. Interact with the volunteers operating the hand bellows and beating metal on the anvil, using the skills and techniques passed down from generation to generation. The fundamentals of fire, metal, muscle and know-how have been put to work for centuries have been conserved and revived by a dedicated team of skilled volunteers.

One of humankind's oldest technologies is the wheel. It's powered agriculture and industrial endeavours for centuries, enabled people to travel and transported goods in all guises. Come and see for yourself the skills, materials and processes needed to craft a wooden wheel.

Directions:
Visitors are advised to find parking nearby and walk to The Yard. Access is through the historic heart of the village behind the beautiful historic pub The Stag's Head. Footpaths lead through from the village church, St Peter's. The main car parking areas are the Ettington Road spur (300m from the entrance - about 5 to 10 minutes' walk) - just before the Co-op store - with overflow parking in the Sports and Social Centre Car Park off Loxley Close.

Uneven floor surfaces require care to be taken but the Yard remains accessible.

Additional information

Our visitor centre will be hosting a new exhibition, knowledgeable volunteers offer guided tours and answer questions. Our tranquil shaded garden offers a place to explore, rest, enjoy historic artefacts found at the yard and partake in some light refreshments.
