'Romans: Settling in Southend' Tour

Victoria Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, SS2 6EW

  • 08 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

A free, guided tour of Southend Central Museum's new interactive exhibition, 'Romans: Settling in Southend', exploring the lives of Roman settlers who chose to make South Essex their home.

Join us at Southend Central Museum for an in depth guided tour of our latest exhibition 'Romans: Settling in Southend', free as part of Heritage Open Days 2024.

Led by one of our Visitor Engagement Officers, this tour will give an overview of the Romans: Settling in Southend exhibition at Southend Central Museum. The exhibition features a stunning collection of Roman artefacts from across South Essex, many of which are being displayed publicly for the first time. While other notable Roman sites in Essex, such as Colchester and Chelmsford, have received significant attention, 'Settling in Southend' aims to spotlight the lesser-known but equally important Roman history of our city.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore artefacts unearthed from Roman settlements spanning from Prittlewell to Wickford, Shoebury to Rayleigh. Unlike traditional narratives focusing solely on battles, revolts and conquest, this exhibition delves into the domestic, offering glimpses into the personal and familiar aspects of Roman life.

The tour is suitable for ages 11+. Prebooking is required. Please book the amount of tickets equal to the number of people in your group, and arrive no later than 10 minutes before your tour start time.
