Join us for this free talk with local history experts of the routes in and out of Sudbury over the centuries that have enabled our industries, culture and communities to stay connected and thrive.

From the Bronze, Iron Age and Saxon fortifications that laid the foundations for Sudbury's current street pattern, the roads taken in and out by merchants trading at our 1000 year old market, to the new possibilities of The Stour Navigation Act in the early 1700s for trade, to the coming of the railway to Sudbury in the mid-1800s opening new possibilities for not only trade but for leisure, right throught to the Beeching cuts and Sudbury's Railway new dawn as a (hard fought) terminus station on the Gainsborough Line and of course the impact of motor vehicles on all of the above...

Our three expert speakers will take us through these routes in chronological order from the paths throd through ancient woodlands, to the fortifications with a single route in and out, to new street patterns, trading piazzas, how the Stour shaped Sudbury and how it continues to be a vital part of our town's heritage and biodiverse landscape. Then, how the coming of the railway impacted the town's fortunes in many ways and they subsequent reshaping of the vast sidings following the cuts.

There will be a panel Q&A after the three presentations. Members of the public are invited to bring in any memorabilia / photos relevant to this talk that they wish to share.
