Ripley Historic Village Walkabout

Village Square, Main Street, Ripley, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG3 3AY

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Ripley is a historic Yorkshire estate village, designed, built and managed for centuries by the Ingilby family. How was it planned and what connection does it have to French villages and the wild boar statue? All will be explained during this walk.

The walk will be led by David Rhodes, retired architect and town planner, and long-time resident of Ripley. Initially, the village was developed on the banks of the River Nidd and then c1390 relocated to higher ground overlooking the Ripley Beck, and the estate created a series of parkland lakes with trees now dating back over a thousand years. However, this is a village walk, embracing only the setting of the Castle and Parkland. The walkabout will pass the historic Endowment School, Hotel de Ville, All Saints church, Boars Head Hotel, and varying styles of estate cottages, returning back to the Market Place from where refreshments might be enjoyed, including the famous Ripley ice cream and locally sourced Brymor ice creams.
