Retrofitted Superhome
39 Hawthorne Road, Bournville, Birmingham, West Midlands, B30 1EQ
Our "Superhome" looks like its fellow semis from the front, but, following our retrofit 14 years ago, we have been buying 70% less gas and 50% electricity than the average. Please be prompt so you will not miss our presentation preceeding the house tour.
Ofgem estimates the typical household in Britain buys 2,900kWh of electricity annually. We buy about 1,400kWh. Why? We use about 900kWh less (ask us how) and we get about 600kWh from our PV panels (on pergola in garden).
Ofgem estimates the typical household buys 12,000kWh of gas annually. We buy about 3,700kWh of gas. Why?
Solar termal panels on the roof give hot water all summer for quick showers.
We set the thermostat to 18C and, on very cold evenings, use the wood burner, but it’s mostly insulation, insulation, insulation:
• very thick loft insulation,
• cavity wall insulation
• double glazing
• insulation inside our walls and
• insulation under suspended floors
• one large window triple glazed
• unheated conservatory covers the rear of the house giving solar gain and further insulation.

The garden is not wheelchair accessible. We can facilitate wheelchair access to our ground floor which would include seeing our presentation.
Please arrive promptly as tours will be preceded by a presentation. We will have toys out for children in the conservatory. Note there is a pond in the garden and toddlers should be supervised.
