The Freemasons of Retford offer you a warm welcome as they open their doors to the public at Retford Masonic Hall for free, as part of National Heritage Open Days 2024. Visit this beautiful art deco building and the home of Retford Freemasonry.

Freemasonry is one of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world, it is also currently one of the largest contributors to charity in the UK. Retford Masonic Hall has been the home of Freemasonry in Retford for over 60 years. Formerly the Ritz Cinema, the cinema closed its doors in 1957 and was purchased in 1962 by local Freemasons who offered the building a new lease of life.

The hall is a prime example and one of the few remaining art deco buildings left in North Nottinghamshire. Internal alterations have been made to the building to make it suitable for holding Masonic meetings as well as other events and it remains in regular use by the Masonic Lodges operating in Retford including Vernon Lodge formed in 1879 (one of the oldest lodges in Nottinghamshire), East Retford Lodge formed in 1967 and Carolgate Lodge formed in 1980.

Freemasonry is a private organisation steeped in history and symbolic significance so don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Masonic Temple located under the hall, admire the organisation's collection of regalia and ask questions of one of Bassetlaw’s most senior Masons when you visit.

This year Retford Masonic Hall will be involved in Heritage Open Days ‘Routes, Networks and Connections’ event as we highlight Freemasonry ideas that have spread across the world and come together throughout history.
