Emma Chaplin walk will encompass mention of some fine feisty historical women of Lewes as well as interesting visitors, including Marilyn Monroe, as well as some of the town’s more unusual features from its long history.

Viva Lewes, a local community magazine, ran for 15 years. Former editor, Emma Chaplin, was often asked if she'd run out of things to write about the town - and the answer was always 'never'. Lewes has an endless variety of interesting stories of people and places running through its veins, or indeed twittens. For this walk, Emma draws upon her years of learning fascinating, sometimes weird and wonderful, tales of Lewes and its inhabitants. This walk will focus on the on the upper High Street and the western part of the town. Come along and learn about some of Lewes's hidden treasures and fascinating characters from its long history. There will be some rough ground and hills involved so sensible footwear advised.

Directions:
The walk begins at Lewes House which is situated in the High Street on the south side just below the war memorial. Participants are asked to go through Lewes House to the garden where the leader of the walk and stewards will be there to greet you. There are toilets at Lewes House and refreshments are being served by the Lewes House Therapeutic Garden Group. Within the house there are exhibitions prepared by the Friends of Lewes about its work in the town and also Lewes History Group who have an exhibition about its activities and a display showing the results of street stories work undertaken by its members, some of which will reflect the Routes, Networks, Connections theme of the festival.
