Public grave, private grave? Rich and poor in Walkley's Victorian Cemetery

Walkley Cemetery, Nichols Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S6 5DU

  • In person

A guided tour of our Victorian cemetery. How is social class reflected in the design of our cemetery and its monuments?

There are people buried in our cemetery from Sheffield workhouses or the paupers' asylum. There are also people from fine homes whose mourners came from among the great and good of Sheffield and arrived in their carriages. We shall look at where these various members of society were buried. Do they have memorials? If not, can we bring their stories to light by other means? Stories will include those of stonemasons and an architect, file cutters and quarry owners, soldiers and chimney sweeps.
