Priory School, Lewes Memorial Chapel

Lewes Priory School Memorial Chapel (in Mountfield Road, on the south side between
East Sussex College and Priory School) was completed in 1960 to the design of SirEdward Maufe, architect of Guildford Cathedral. It was built as a chapel for the Lewes County Grammar School for Boys (1930-1969) as an IWM Registered war memorial to 55 former students killed during World War II. Most of Maufe's original interior fittings are in situ. Above the entrance there is a carved relief of St. George and the Dragon by Alan Collins. The bell in its slender tower came from the former Lewes Naval Prison and was restored in 2020. The organ was built in 1874 by William Hill & Son and was originally situated in the Chapel of Cuddeston Theological College near Oxford. Guides available from 1.00pm.
The bell will be rung, the organ will be played and there will be talks and displays on the history of the building, its original purpose, the tortuous years of fundraising to build it and the current restoration projects.
