Discover the fascinating history of dealing with Preston's rubbish on the site of an early 'manure depot'. Tour site of the former 'refuse destructor' built in the 1880s to collect, sort and burn waste.

Originally on the outskirts of Preston, The Argyll Road site has been processing the city's rubbish since the early 19th century, first as the place where 'night soll' was dumped and then as a purpose built facility for managing the collecting, sorting and disposal of household waste. The tour takes in the Victorian brick buildings, including the stables for the horses that pulled the dustcarts and the smithy where they were shod, the old tipping area and how the rubbish is processed today.

Please wear sturdy shoes- no sandals or open toed shoes allowed on site.
