Popular Music in Leeds: Histories, Heritage, People and Places – a Guided Walking Tour

University of Leeds Student Union, Lifton Place, leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 9JS

  • 11 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

A guided walking tour of Leeds’ musical histories, heritage, people and places, with Dr Paul Thompson and Dr Brett Lashua.

Leeds has spawned crooners, folk singers, punks, post-punks, Goths, DJs, popstars, rappers, indie rockers and more. Yet, with a few exceptions, Leeds has not been studied for its musical cultures in ways that other UK cities have, such as Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and Sheffield. In many ways, Leeds is a city with a “lost” local musical heritage, hidden even to many of those who live there. The first academic book dedicated to mapping Leeds’ popular music histories, heritage, people and places was published in December 2023. Two of the co-editors, Dr Paul Thompson and Dr Brett Lashua, will take walkers on a whistle-stop tour of the city’s often hidden musical heritage.

This is a guided walking tour around the city centre of Leeds; it will be largely be at ground level and involve moving at a moderate pace between central music heritage locations. We’ll try to make use of existing external street furniture for visitors to rest whilst we tell stories where possible. We’ll also try to avoid steps and steep climbs where possible but we ask everyone to take care when walking on different surfaces if wet or icy, particularly in cobbled or uneven areas and when using steps or kerbs. The walking tour will be outside, so we ask walkers to wear appropriate clothing f
