Planes and Trains: 8 mile circular walk and behind scenes heritage tours of Barton Aerodrome/Irlam Signal Box
Irlam Station, Station Road, Irlam, Greater Manchester, M44 5ZR
We invite you 9.30 am - 10 am to step inside our lovingly restored Midland 2A 1884 heritage signal box, which previously stood at Keighley Station and now sits at Irlam Station. Followed by a circular 8 miles walk (10 am) over the beautiful Chat Moss to Barton Aerodrome. At the Aerodrome you will receive a guided tour led by Friends of Barton Aerodrome, giving you an amazing behind the scenes view of this historic airport.
Please note the following.
• Irlam is a working Station - trains Liverpool -to - Manchester - accessible by train.
• Cafe/bar on site at Irlam Station.
• Pack lunch/water required - no shops once we leave Irlam and go over Chat Moss.
• Refreshments - tea/coffee/water etc. can be purchased in cafe/bar at the Aerodrome.
• Circular walk - return to Irlam Station via Old River Irwell - finishing 2.30pm/3pm
• Please pack clothes for weather (wet/hot etc) and wear shoes with grip.
• Terrain is uneven, some inclined dirt roads/pavement but no large hill walking involved.
• Barton Aerodrome has public transport links for return to Irlam Station or alternative destinations such as Eccles/Salford/Trafford Centre/Manchester via bus.
• Dogs welcome on a lead, but note they would not be permitted on the tour at Barton.
• Children suggested 8+ years - little legs will need to keep up as we need to keep to time on the outward walk.
Parking: limited parking at Irlam Station due to current building works we encourage sharing cars - bus/train links available.
