Parkwood Springs - from Deer Park to Country Park
Parkwood Springs Car Park, Shirecliffe Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S5 8XB
We will walk around parts of Parkwood Springs, originally a medieval deer park, now a 150 hectare (370 acre) green open space which the ongoing masterplan sets out to make into 'Our Country Park In The City', only a mile from the centre of Sheffield. We will see the best views in the city and hear about the changing uses of the site, which has seen woodland industries, farming, quarrying, mining, brick making, landfill and electricity generation. A village has been built and demolished, dissenting ministers have lived here, artists have painted the views and poets have proclaimed their beauty. We'll hear about fatal prize fights and second world war heroism, visit gun emplacements and a heliport, and look down over a ski village and one of only two cemeteries in England with a railway running through it. More paths and bike tracks, a kiosk and toilets have recently been completed and over £19m of levelling up funding has been allocated to redevelop the old ski village site and bring about the next stage of creation of our Country Park.
This walk is part of the Sheffield Walking Festival.
