Our Lady Star of the Sea and St. Peter

After the Reformation Bridlington’s first Catholic Church, St William’s built 1886, proved too small for a growing congregation. Rev James Clancy DD, arrived in the Parish in 1893, purchasing land in Victoria Road for a Church and Presbytery.
Smith, Brodrick and Lowther of Hull designed the Church in an early style of Gothic architecture, at a cost of £1870.

The Foundation stone was laid on 19th August 1893 by Bishop Lacy of Middlesborough. The west front is the prominent feature, built in thin red brick and stone dressing. The massive buttresses terminate in a lofty pinnacle of stone. A finely worked cross is fixed on the Apex.

With the sea in mind, the name of the church was chosen, Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Peter, the patron saint of fishermen. Their statues reside in the niches above the main door. On August 31st 1894 a Dedication Service was held, conducted by Bishop Lacy, the building was named, The Church of Our Lady and St Peter. The Church was Consecrated on June 29th 1905.
