This Grade II listed neoclassical building built in 1826 has connections with the notable Gurney family and was designed by architect John Patience. It is still used by more than 80 community groups and for Quaker worship, every Sunday and Wednesday.

Norwich Quaker Meeting House, in Upper Goat Lane, will be open to the public on Saturday, the 7th of September, between 10am and 4pm!

We will welcome you to enjoy the garden, followed by a tour of the building. There will be several exhibitions on show to illustrate the history of this site, which has been occupied by Quakers for the last 350 years, including an exhibition celebrating the 400th Anniversary of George Fox's life, generally held to be the founder of the Quaker movement; an exhibition designed by the children, of the meaning behind the various Quaker acronyms, denoting the work done by Quakers here and throughout the world and a model of the present Meeting House, built in 1826 and designed by Thomas Patience, who also designed the chapel in Willow Lane. All are welcome!

Quakers first met on this site on Upper Goat Lane in the 1670s. In 1700 there were probably 500 Quakers in Norwich. Norwich has always been an important Quaker centre. In the early part of the nineteenth century, when the present meeting house was built, Norfolk Quakers like Joseph Gurney, his sister Elizabeth Fry and their Anglican brother-in-law Thomas Buxton were nationally conspicuous social reformers. For both these reasons, the Goat Lane Meeting House has exceptional historical value.

The Norwich Quaker Meeting House will be open all day to visitors; all are welcome to attend!
