Norwich Cathedral: Julian's many connections
The Dean & Chapter of Norwich Cathedral, Chapter Office, 65 The Close, Norwich, Norfolk, NR1 4DH
In the late 14th century, Julian of Norwich turned her back on the everyday world to live a life of contemplation as an anchoress and recluse. But she also wrote a book, Revelations of Divine Love, whose reputation has spread far and side, earning her the title of ‘mother of English prose.’ This tour will explore the connections which took her name and her writing out of the enclosed cell where she lived and into the wider world. We’ll look at the people of her time who knew of her, who valued her insight, in the city, and across Norfolk and Suffolk, including Margery Kempe the mystic, who describes her encounter with Julian in her autobiography; the long journey Julian’s book made across countries and centuries before becoming as well-known as it is today; and the impact she had on the religious life of Norwich after her life, and on the Norwich of today: making it a centre for pilgrimage from across the world, as visitors come to St Julian’s church (a church which would no longer exist, but for Julian’s reputation) to spend time in her shrine and in the study centre which bears her name.
