Norwich Cathedral: how did they build this?
The Dean & Chapter of Norwich Cathedral, Chapter Office, 65 The Close, Norwich, Norfolk, NR1 4DH
We have names of some individual craftsmen whose skills were used at Norwich Cathedral in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, but one individual who has disappeared from the records is the Master-Mason who devised and supervised the construction of this wonderful building from 1096 until its completion in just under fifty years.
We can list the attributes he needed to get the original Norman construction campaign underway. In today’s terminology he was not only the Master Mason, but also the Architect, the Designer, Clerk of Works, Quantity Surveyor, Work-Force Employer and Materials Quality Control Officer.
He would have entrusted the delegation of many duties and tasks among the workforce. We can determine and reveal the great skills Norwich’s Master Mason must have possessed by studying how other Romanesque cathedrals were constructed.
We can demonstrate how his skills and expertise were applied and how he marshalled all the skilled and support staff on site whose ultimate aim was to build Norwich’s magnificent Romanesque cathedral.
There are fascinating clues embedded in the building’s ancient fabric that allow us to determine exactly how many of the stones were shaped, positioned and bonded. Similar clues remain on some of the later medieval wooden furnishings, demonstrating how their various component parts were created and brought together.
Delights and surprises on this tour will give you an insight into how this impressive Norwich icon was built.
