Norwich Cathedral: Edith Cavell
The Dean & Chapter of Norwich Cathedral, Chapter Office, 65 The Close, Norwich, Norfolk, NR1 4DH
This part-talk, part-tour will cover the life story of Norfolk-born Edith Cavell, from her childhood as the daughter of the rector in the village of Swardeston, her education leading to her early working life as a governess in Belgium before her strong Christian principles moved her to find a more practical way to be of service. And thus began her training to become a nurse.
Edith worked in hospitals in the poor London areas of King’s Cross and Shoreditch, as well as in Manchester during the late nineteenth century before accepting the post of Matron in Belgium’s first training hospital in Brussels. Her pioneering work led her to be considered one of the founders of nursing education there.
But her subsequent involvement with the underground movement, helping allied soldiers during the First World War, ended in a betrayal that lead to her arrest, trial, imprisonment, execution, burial and – eventually - her repatriation back to her home county.
The tour will visit Edith’s memorial statue as well as her grave, and there will be a special focus on the gallery of commissioned paintings by Brian Whelan which hang in the cathedral, and particular mention of three soldiers who were helped by Edith – including one who helped to bring her home for her last memorial service, here in Norwich Cathedral.
