Come and explore the bridge crossings of the River Ure at Ripon. Learn about the history from medieval times to the modern day.

Explore the bridge crossings of the River Ure at and near Ripon’s historic North Bridge. The story spans not just the river but centuries of engineering know-how. We will look closely at the medieval stone North Bridge, find the site of the all-but-vanished Victorian railway bridge and venture under the modern and innovative Duchess of Kent Bridge carrying the A61.

Directions:
Meet at 1030 at the southern end of North Bridge at the junction with Magdalens Road. The walk will last approximately 1 hour. The route is mainly on paved surfaces and is step-free with the option of accessing the adjacent field and river bank so stout footwear is recommended particularly if the weather is wet.

Additional information

There is very limited on-street parking nearby. Bus RS4 runs from Ripon Bus Station at 09.55 arriving at Riverside Meadows at 10.00 from where it is a two minute walk to North Bridge. The return journey leaves Magdalens Road at 11.34 to arrive back at the Bus Station for 11.38.
