Newport Heritage Festival - Newport General Cemetery Chapel of Remembrance

Newport General Cemetery, Audley Avenue, Newport Town Council, Newport, Shropshire, TF10 7AR

  • 14 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Visit the Chapel of Remembrance and take a tour of some of the graves of historical or local importance.

On Saturday the 14th of September, Newport is opening as many doors as possible.
Some of our historic buildings will be open for the public to visit free of charge. These include the Tudor Guildhall, the Newport Cemetery Chapel of Remembrance and a walk of some of the most interesting graves in the cemetery, St. Nicholas Church (and hopefully the bell tower too), the Black Shed at the canal (Victorian warehouse) and others.

The Chapel of Remembrance was opened in 1859 as part of the Newport Cemetery. Built of cream sandstone, the chapel is typical of the period and features external finials, gothic stone crosses on each gable, a large triple lancet window with curved floral tracery, a rose window over the entrance door and a wonderful exposed beam, vaulted ceiling.
