Newport Heritage Festival - Guildhall Newport Shropshire
The Guildhall, 1 High Street, Newport, Shropshire, TF10 7AR
On Saturday the 14th of September, Newport is opening as many doors as possible.
Some of our historic buildings will be open for the public to visit free of charge. These include the Tudor Guildhall, the Newport Cemetery Chapel of Remembrance and a walk of some of the most interesting graves in the cemetery, St. Nicholas Church (and hopefully the bell tower too), the Black Shed at the canal (Victorian warehouse) and others.
The Guildhall is a Grade II* listed building that was refurbished by the Town Council, with funding from English Heritage in 1994.
Many original features are visible, including decorated timbers, unique in this part of Shropshire. Examples of architecture and furnishings are also evident, demonstrating the social and economic history of the building. It is now the administrative headquarters of Newport Town Council and as such, is not generally open to the public.
For the Heritage open Days Festival, members of the public will be able to tour the Guildhall and discover first-hand, some of the amazing architecture and history behind the well-known Guildhall façade.
Newport Town Council staff and the History Society on hand in each room to provide detailed information and facts on the unique architecture and history of the building.
