Built in 1668, Newent’s black and white Market House has been the centre of the town for over 300 years. For the past 25 it has housed a display of local history and a sizeable collection of artefacts found locally – bronze age, Roman, and more recent. We also have a small collection of local history books which attract visitors who are researching family history. In a separate small room there is a display of more recent music history: Joe Meek, early electronic music-maker was born in Newent, and mid-20th century choral and classical music composer Rutland Boughton lived nearby.
