Willmer House, the home of the Museum of Farnham, is an outstanding and little altered example of a Georgian townhouse. It was built in 1718 for a wealthy hop merchant, John Thorne, and today it is one of Farnham’s only two nonecclesiastical Grade I Listed Buildings. It is a symmetrical early Georgian townhouse with Baroque design influences and many original interior features.
The front façade is a tour de force of rubbed and gauged red brickwork with fine putty joints, though this is currently obscured by scaffolding pending repair work.
Behind the house is a sheltered walled garden, secluded and quiet, with a portrait bust of William Cobbett. The modern Garden Gallery is a teaching and exhibition space which can be hired for private events.
