Moot Hall Council Chamber
Moot Hall, Boroughgate, Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, CA16 6YB
Discover Moot Hall Council Chamber this Heritage Open Days. Built in the market place in 1596, it served as a civic centre to house Appleby Corporation (now the Town Council), with additional space for rent. There have been many alterations to the structure, but - almost uniquely among only several such buildings in England - the council chamber is still used for its original purpose.
Appleby’s copy of Foxe’s ‘Book of Martyrs’ published in 1631-32 will be on display in the Moot Hall Exhibition Centre and local historian Barry McKay will be there on Sunday from 11am-1pm to provide more in-depth knowledge about the volumes.
