Mid Norfolk Family History Society - Immigration and Emigration - Comings and goings in history.

Church House, Church Street, Dereham, Norfolk, NR19 1DN

This year, we are looking at how people travelled around in the past. Contrary to popular belief, our ancestors often went looking for work and opportunities to better themselves. Just how far some Dereham folk went will surprise you!

People moved around the globe in the past, but not all of them left Dereham for far away places, some came to the Dereham area from afar too. In 1851 there were people born in America, Jamaica and Australia living in this part of Norfolk and, by 1881 there were people who were born in Quebec, Bombay and Adelaide.

Family history can be a great way to learn about far flung places as well as villages just up the road.

We will be in Church House, Church Street, Dereham on the 7th and 14th of September, between 1000 and 1600 and we look forward to seeing you there.

If you want help with your own family history research, we will also have lots of information about starting your family tree and there will be several of us on hand to answer your questions.
